Innovate to compete, better

Academic institutions need a robust, resilient, and secure IT infrastructure to keep up with the demands of education today. And with constant budget pressures and struggles to stay on the cutting edge, it can be difficult to attract the best students, hire top personnel, win grants, and produce leading research.

In this challenging environment, Red Hat partners with academia to innovate by adopting cloud initiatives that optimize research infrastructures, implement artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) solutions, and manage large amounts of data. And our open source solutions ultimately lower technology costs and deliver much-needed cost predictability.

ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS RELY ON RED HAT

Enhancing education with open source

See how experts at Red Hat work with academic institutions to modernize IT infrastructures, customize migration, meet security and compliance regulations, integrate data and analytics, and streamline operations.

Modernization and optimization

Today’s top talent expects modern cloud technologies, research infrastructure, and processes to quickly deploy labs and applications.

Red Hat® OpenShift®  gives education and healthcare professionals the advantage of hybrid cloud to deploy new environments in minutes while retaining on-premise data control and security.

Customized migration

Academic institutions face the need to reduce complexity while eliminating technical debt built up over decades with overlapping technologies and aging IT infrastructure.

Red Hat migration solutions help customers move from expensive proprietary virtualization infrastructure to modern, open technologies like Linux containers, hyperconverged platforms, automation, and multi-cloud management.

Customized infrastructure

Faculty in grant-driven environments often need to scope, build, and support platforms—diverting precious resources from research.

To help shift the focus back to research from IT management, Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat® Ansible® Automation Platform work together as a Research Platform-as-a-Service (RPaaS) to equip teams to build on-demand environments, automate deployments of research toolsets like Open Data Hub, and retire environments when the project is over.

Security and compliance

Accurately capturing and responding to security incidents—while meeting critical compliance requirements for research grants—is a concern facing academic institutions today.

Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform automates the processes of incident response, threat hunting, and investigation enrichment to improve the accuracy and speed of security operations.

Data integration

Universities need robust research platforms to process large amounts of data, securely and in compliance with relevant standards.

Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Application Services help academic institutions holistically integrate disparate data and systems to reduce waste and costs, improve patient outcomes, and ensure compliance.

Data analytics

Academic institutions need faster, more effective insights to conduct cutting-edge research and improve patient outcomes.

With open source technologies like Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® and Red Hat OpenShift®, we support data analytics solutions that address critical use cases in academia and healthcare.

Streamlined operations

Managing the business side of education requires efficient daily operations that allow learning and research to advance uninterrupted.

Through its simplicity and versatility, Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform solves the most common and time-consuming security, compliance, and operations challenges while improving efficiency and reducing costs related to these activities.

Syracuse University

Challenge: Syracuse wanted to ensure its iSchool graduates had expertise in leading-edge technologies and platforms to prepare them for future roles as business transformation leaders.

Solution: Through Red Hat Academy, students gained valuable exposure to Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes and access to innovative course material, hands-on labs, and real-world opportunities to apply learning in enterprise technology and cloud computing.

Results: Syracuse graduates gained skills in leading-edge technologies and platforms to prepare them for tech-driven jobs in the modern economy.

Emory University

Emory University’s security team alerted the IT team of a security vulnerability that needed to be remediated quickly. An event such as this would have been very disruptive to the team’s regular operational and project work, not to mention the hours required to manually remediate the patch across more than 500 Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers as well as the potential data breach. Emory used Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to write a playbook and automate remediating all hosts. What would have taken up to two weeks to remediate across all servers took collectively four hours.

Red Hat Academy bridges the gap between education and industry by partnering with academic institutions around the world to provide the next generation of IT talent with free access to a range of Red Hat’s training courses and certification exams. TEACHING HOSPITALS RELY ON RED HAT

Improving patient outcomes with open source

See how experts at Red Hat work with teaching hospitals to improve patient outcomes by supporting systems that connect apps and integrate patient data to make data-driven decisions based on analytics and clinical reasoning—while meeting security and compliance regulations.

Connecting apps and patient data

With patient data spread across an average of 16 electronic health record (EHR) systems and scheduling, insurance, and claims applications, providers need integrated connectivity to make data-driven decisions, meet government privacy standards, and scale for exponential growth in data storage.

Red Hat helps teaching hospitals to meet automated security and Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance by working closely with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop the Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP). By combining OpenSCAP and Red Hat automation, providers can implement an operating system security hardening solution that provides fast, verifiable, repeatable security for HIPAA compliance.

System support

Clinical research organizations need efficient and affordable processes and systems that allow researchers to focus on finding medical breakthroughs rather than supporting systems.

Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform work together as a Research Platform-as-a-Service (RPaaS) to equip teams to build on-demand environments, automate deployments of research toolsets like Open Data Hub, and retire environments when the project is over.

Analyzing patient data

Teaching hospitals seek to treat patients holistically, but struggle to fully use data and machine learning (ML) for meaningful insights. Also, manual workflows to move data from one system to another can delay diagnosis and treatment and burden clinicians and staff.

Red Hat offers Connected Health to provide a blueprint for connecting, processing, and leveraging clinical, financial, administrative, and life sciences data consistently, and at scale. By using Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Application Services, providers can integrate disparate data and systems to reduce waste and costs, improve patient health, and ensure compliance.

Improving patient outcomes

Collecting and interpreting patient data for clinical reasoning is critical for teaching hospitals to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift can help healthcare providers address critical use cases including clinical reasoning, health engagement, claims management, and more.

Challenge: Clinicians have traditionally detected sepsis based on manual review of patient charts during shift changes, often leading to delayed diagnosis of a condition that becomes 4-7% more deadly every hour. HCA Healthcare wanted to diagnose sepsis sooner.

Solution: Red Hat partnered with HCA clinicians, data scientists, and IT professionals to use OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Ansible Automation Platform to build Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy (SPOT), a platform that automates the collection and analysis of clinical data such as patient location, vital signs, and pharmacy and laboratory data from more than 200 hospitals. When the data indicate sepsis, SPOT notifies caregivers to start treatment.

Results: HCA Healthcare now detects sepsis up to 20 hours sooner, which saves lives. The hospital plans to use the same platform for insights to improve other aspects of patient care.
